Jock Sturges at Auction

Jock Sturges, Iris, Montalivet, 1991, Gelatin silver print, 14 1/2 x 18 1/2 in., edition of 40. Titled, signed, dated and numbered "Sturges '91 (c) 7/40" in pencil on the reverse.

It is not common that Skinner Auctioneers sells photos from Jock Sturges, but a photograph of a child seemingly sitting completely alone at a beach in Southwest France is Lot 366 of the next auction American & European Paintings & Prints & Photography held at Boston. It is as well uncommon that Jock Sturges expresses loneliness in his pictures, they are rather about people and their relationships with each other and nature. This print is unique because it is at least unconciously conceptual. Perhaps it was just the perspective of the plain beach and the idea of reductionism that motivated Sturges to let the child pose at the line that draws the water, at the edge of the sea. The estimate of the framed gelatin silver print is $800 - 1200. It is suspenseful to get the auction result next week. Besides the photo of Jock Sturges works of Harold Eugene Edgerton, Edward Clark and Christopher Burkett are going to be presented.
